Nikon D-Movie

I do not have a Nikon with video, I was thinking of swapping my D300 for a D90, as I now also have a D700. While purest photographers often ‘pooh hoo’ (technical term) the use of DSLR’s for video, it appears to be generating a lot of interest. The rumour that Steven Speilburg was seen with a Canon 5D MKII, with ‘Full HD’ abilities, dented the sales of certain $15,000 dedicated HD Video machines! (Nikon, as you may know, offer HD movie at 720, while the 5D MKII offers full HD at 1080. I have seen the results of both, and to be honest I can’t see much difference.)

But, if you have a Nikon equipped with the D-Movie ability you may be interested in the tips provided by Nikon here.

Free Battery Grip with Nikon D700

But only if you buy a D700!

The FX-format D700 is compactly designed for terrific shots on the move. Buy it between May 1 and June 30 and you can claim a free MB-D10 battery-pack grip (RRP £343.99). As well as extending operating time, the MB-D10 boosts advance rate to 8fps and enhances vertical grip and control.

I have the D700, and while I do not have the official Nikon battery grip (I have a great clone) the battery grip is a most welcome addition. I find it most useful for wedding photography, not just for portraits shots, but the extended battery time is superb.

So if you are thinking of going ‘full frame’, then perhaps now is the time to do so!

Adobe Lightroom is for RAW shooters

I must admit that I only use Capture NX2, but many of my friends use Lightroom, and the new Lightroom 3 Beta 2 looks very interesting. There is free version to download and play with here.

Firmware Update: Coolpix S640 and S4000

New firmware for Coolpix cameras:

Nikon has new versions of the firmware for its Coolpix S640 and S4000 available.
In rare cases, images that were taken with the digital zoom of the S640 were not correctly saved. That was resolved.

With the S4000 the frame rate for the video mode HD 720p was changed from 24 images per second to 30 images per second.

The updates and detailed how-to’s can be found at Nikon:

The DX and FX Formats

In digital cameras, the camera’s format refers to the size of its image sensor. Nikon makes a DX-format sensor and an FX-format sensor. The DX-format is the smaller sensor at 24x16mm; the larger FX-format sensor measures 36x24mm which is approximately the same size as 35mm film.

Nikon has made available a new firmware version for the D3 Digital SLR.
